ABSTRACT
Memorability is an indicator of how well a stimulus can be remembered. Studies on memorability have shown that stimulus memorability cannot be explained by the perceptual and semantic properties of a stimulus, suggesting that memorability is an intrinsic property of a stimulus. Though real-world scenes almost always contain multiple objects, previous studies on memorability have mainly tested memory performance using a single stimulus. In the current study, we investigated how multiple stimuli with different levels of memorability interact with each other. Participants were asked to remember a high or low memorability target presented with a high or low memorability distractor in the encoding block. Participants’ memory accuracy was measured by a sensitivity index in the testing block. Results showed that a high memorability target was easier to remember. However, the distractor memorability level did not modulate this target memorability effect. The current results support previous studies that showed a highly memorable stimulus does not automatically induce bottom-up attentional shifts.

KJSES 25(2) 11-22, 2022 DOI : 10.14695/KJSOS.2022.25.2.11 |
ABSTRACT
As social beings, we need to understand others’ actions as quickly and accurately as possible. Action understanding can occur at many levels. We sometimes grasp others’ intentions unintentionally. Other times, however, we have to expend effort to draw inferences about their goals. In the context of joint action, the joint Simon effect demonstrates that actors are influenced by the unintended representation of a co-actor’s actions. This effect has been described as quasi-automatic, but it is unclear if the effect is automatic enough to be immune to cognitive load. Thus, we asked participants to complete a joint Simon task with or without a concurrent working memory task. One group of participants maintained a single digit in their mind during working memory load blocks (low-load group), while the other group maintained five digits (high-load group). As a result, the low-load group showed a joint Simon effect both during no-load and low-load blocks. In contrast, the high-load group had no joint Simon effect during either no-load or high-load blocks. These results suggest that the joint Simon effect is not an automatic phenomenon given that it requires cognitive resources. Actors in a joint task may represent a co-actor’s actions in their task set, but only when cognitive resources are available.

KJSES 25(2) 23-30, 2022 DOI : 10.14695/KJSOS.2022.25.2.23 |
ABSTRACT
The weight of an object is an important research topic in terms of sense, and objects have size-weight, color-weight, and material-weight illusions due to the influence of size, color, and material and the weight of the object. Although temperature is a very important environmental factor in our daily life, there is a dearth of studies on how the temperature of an object affects its perceived weight. This study analyzed the effect of an object’s temperature on the perceived weight. A stainless steel cup, in which weight and temperature are easily adjustable, was selected as a perceived weight measurement object; 5 temperature levels (0, 9, 20, 40, 70 degrees) and 2 weight levels (250, 400 g) were set. A total of 40 healthy men and women in their 20s participated in the experiment. The weight of the given cup compared to the reference cup was evaluated according to the modulus method. The study revealed that both temperature and weight significantly affected the perceived weight. The effect of temperature on the weight was different depending on the weight of the object. When the cup’s weight was small (250 g), the temperature of the cup did not affect the weight. However, the perceived weight of a large cup (400 g) increased at a low temperature. This result suggests that the effect of temperature on the weight of an object depends on the size-weight illusion.

KJSES 25(2) 31-44, 2022 DOI : 10.14695/KJSOS.2022.25.2.31 |
ABSTRACT
Power and status are core elements that distinguish social classes and strongly influence social interaction. Although they are the foundation of social influence, they have different origins (Fragale et al., 2011). While power usually is based on personal ability or legal, institutional legitimacy, status is rooted in voluntary support from other people. Hence, whereas people with power often demonstrate egoistic behavior, those with high status show relationship-based altruism (Hasty & Maner, 2020). People recognize the difference between the two and have stereotypical beliefs or expectations about the people’s behavior with high power or status (Magee, 2009). The current research tested how the judgment on social exclusion, the unique social influence of power and status, changes depending on the actor’s power and status. We constructed social exclusion scenarios in which we manipulated actors’ power and status and asked participants to rate an actor’s pain and behavioral fairness. Participants’ ratings showed that the actor’s fairness and pain would differ depending on the actor’s power and status (Expt. 1), which is consistent with the stereotypes above. In particular, the significant effects of the actor’s anonymity in the cases of low power and high status (Expts. 2A, 2B) provide further evidence for the proposal that status but not power originates from voluntary support from others.

KJSES 25(2) 45-54, 2022 DOI : 10.14695/KJSOS.2022.25.2.45 |
ABSTRACT
This study aimed to investigate the effect of subjective factors (figure recognition and stress) and objective factors (blood biochemical parameters) on body mass index by gender difference in Korean adults. This study analyzed 3,343 subjects older than 20 years according to gender using the Sixth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey database. Specifically, male subjects had higher body mass index than female subjects (p < .001) and were more frequent in the obese group.. Female subjects had higher stress and platelet score than male subjects (p < .001). Male subjects had significantly higher white blood cell counts (p < .001). The factors affecting the occurrence of obesity by gender difference was highly associated with subjective figure recognition (95% CI = 0.026~0.045, p < .001), stress (95% CI = 0.487~0.925, p = .015) and white blood count (95% CI = 1.232~1.392, p < .001) in females. These findings demonstrate a gender-specific difference in recognizing subjective factors and especially the objective factors of white blood cells and platelets affecting obesity. These results can be used for obesity education or fundamental data for establishing a nursing arrangement program for Korean adults.

KJSES 25(2) 55-70, 2022 DOI : 10.14695/KJSOS.2022.25.2.55 |
ABSTRACT
In the 21st century, the demand for eco-friendly leather, such as eco-leather and vegan leather, is steadily increasing. This study examines the influence of eco-friendliness on consumers’ purchasing intentions and the possibility of eco-friendly changes in the fashion accessory market, which is dominated by leather material and leather substitutes. This study administered a questionnaire survey to 227 males and females between 20 and 60 years of age in Korea. With a 5-point Likert scale, data were collected on evaluation criteria when purchasing shoes and bags and purchasing intention of various leather substitute materials according to the democratic variables. The eco-friendliness attitude was divided into eco-consciousness and green behavior. As the eco-friendly attitude increased, most purchasing standards increased, but the purchasing criteria, such as trends, brands, and prices, did not correlate with the eco-friendly attitude. The eco-consciousness of a consumer had a high correlation with the design evaluation criteria, while the green behavior of the consumer aligned with durability and comfort criteria when purchasing a bag. There was a preference for recycled leather, vegetable leather, synthetic leather, and chemical leather, and the fabric type was ranked as natural fiber, biodegradable fiber, and synthetic fiber. Consumers with both green behavior and eco-consciousness are more likely to purchase biodegradable textiles and vegetable leather for the material of shoes and bags.

KJSES 25(2) 71-78, 2022 DOI : 10.14695/KJSOS.2022.25.2.71 |
ABSTRACT
This study investigates the recommendation for tax accounting services used in many companies. In particular, it aims to create guidelines for small businesses with fewer than 100 employees, which are relatively difficult to manage in terms of cost or time. We surveyed 100 corporate officials on basic business information, such as the number of employees, job titles, and business type, as well as the type of tax accounting service, the recommended score for the service, the reason for the score, and other opinions related to tax accounting services. In particular, the recommendation score seeks to obtain more effective results by using the Net Promoter Score method, which is known to be more effective in understanding customer opinions than general customer satisfaction surveys. The survey revealed a Net Promoter Score for a recommendation of -33 points, lower than the general Net Promoter Score. It also indicated that tax accounting services need improvement. Specifically, the opinions of the respondents who gave a non-recommendation score were as follows: “Not inconvenient or comfortable,” “It was just okay,” “I don’t know if it would be helpful,” and “There is no differentiation and there are no special alternatives.” We concluded that an improved service for raising recommendation scores was necessary. This survey focused on recommendations for companies with fewer than 100 employees; future studies should incorporate larger companies and more variables.

ABSTRACT
With external air pollution forcing many people indoors, new methods of facilitating healthier indoor life are necessary. This study, therefore, investigates the effects of indoor oxygen concentration and respiration methods on biosignals and cognitive ability. The study included twenty healthy subjects who inhaled air through a mask from a gas delivery system. All subjects were asked to perform three types of breathing (nasal, oral, and oral breathing with high oxygenation) and respond to cognitive stimuli (rest close eye, rest open eye, 1-back and 2-back working memory tasks). The changes in cognitive load according to respiration were analyzed by measuring response time, accuracy, and biosignals to stimuli. The result showed that, in all three respirations, heart rate significantly increased with the increase in cognitive load. Also, in oral respiration, the airway respiration rate significantly increased according to the increase in cognitive load. The change appeared to compensate for insufficient oxygen supply in oral respiration during cognitive activity. Conversely, there was no significant change in airway respiration rate during oral respiration with a high concentration oxygen supply as in nasal respiration. This result suggests that a high concentration oxygen supply might play a role in compensating for insufficient oxygen concentration or inefficient oxygen inhalation, such as oral respiration. Based on the results of this study, a follow-up study is necessary to determine the impact of changes in the autonomic nervous system, such as stress and emotions, to find out more precise and comprehensive effects of oxygen concentration and breathing type.

ABSTRACT
People who spend more time alone tend to report higher levels of loneliness. However, whether people experience loneliness in solitude can differ The current research investigated the role of a sense of power as a predictor of loneliness among people who lack social interaction. investigated factors predicting loneliness in people with little social time large-scale survey data. As a result of discriminant analysis, a sense of power was verified as a factor that lonely non-lonely groups. a sense of power As a result, a causal relationship between a sense of power and social loneliness was confirmed. When people feel alone, a high sense of power can work as a buffer against loss of belongingness and the experience of social loneliness. This research focused on psychological rather than situational factors to alleviate loneliness in the current situation where social encounters are limited due to the increase of single-person households and the 19 pandemic.

ABSTRACT
Alcohol abuse negatively affects the individual alcoholics and their families, including children. This paper investigates interventions that help children of alcoholics psychosocially and psychopathologically. We investigated domestic and international literature by searching the related databases and reviewing articles. Inclusion criteria were studies on psychological interventions for children of alcoholics (CoAs) or both CoAs and parents. Results suggest that the interventions help CoAs reduce their emotional and behavioral problems. After the review, the research results were discussed, and suggested further effective interventions. The study is valuable because it reviewed the studies that improved CoAs’ psychological problems and suggested future directions
