ABSTRACT
There have been many emotion researches to investigate physiological responses on specific emotions with physiological parameters such as heart rate, blood volume flow, and skin conductance. Very few researches, however, exists by detecting them with facial skin temperature. The purpose of present study was to observe the differences of facial skin temperature by using thermal camera, when participants stimulated by monitor scenes which could evoke fear or joy. There were totally 98 of participants; undergraduate students who were in their adult age and middle, high school students who were in their adolescence. We measured their facial temperature, before and after presenting emotional stimulus to see changes between both times. Temperature values were extracted in these regions; forehead, inner corners of the eyes, bridge of the nose, end of the nose, and cheeks. Temperature values in bridge and end of the nose were significantly decreased in fear emotion stimulated. There was also significant temperature increase in the area of forehead and the inner corners of the eyes, while the temperature value in end of the nose decreased. It showed decrease in both stimulated fear and joy. These results might be described as follows: When arousal level going up, sympathetic nervous activity increases, and in turn it makes blood flow in peripheral vessels under the nose decrease. Facial temperature changes by fear or joy in this study were the same as the previous studies which measured temperature of finger tip, when participants experiencing emotions. Our results may help to develop emotion-measuring techniques and establish computer system bases which are to detect human emotions.

ABSTRACT
Generally, cosmetic creams have been used to moisturize and smooth human skin. Recently, people concerns about the creams released with natural flavors and its functionality. This study focused to assess the psychophysiological effects of creams with 5 natural flavors such as patchouli oil, frankincense, sandalwood oil, none and newly developed S6. Initially, we have performed subjective evaluation for 100 female subjects aged 20 to 30 from Daejeon, South Korea. The results showed the most preferred flavor was S6 condition. Second, physiological evaluations for 20 female subjects were measured with EEG, ECG and GSR. In EEG analysis, the alpha ratio was confirmed to appear higher in each condition. The statistical analysis shows that significantly largest effect at S6 condition(p <0.05). The result from ECG and GSR measurements also shows the same trend. Third, skin conditions were measured when using S6. As a result, the skin temperature, humidity and skin movement speed were increased with S6 condition. The moisturizing and elasticity effects were confirmed.

|

KJSES 15(1) 17-28, 2012 |
ABSTRACT
Recent development of 3D technologies made it possible that observers perceive 3D depth from two dimensional images. Despite this kind of technological development, when observers watch 3D display they experience 3D visual fatigue that they do not usually experience in real life. It is critical to measure visual fatigue in order to overcome the problem of 3D visual fatigue. The purpose of the present study was to develop a protocol to measure 3D visual fatigue based on an EEG signal and to examine its validity. The first experiment explored the possible ERP components that reflected visual fatigue in 2D and 3D conditions. The second experiment examined whether the feature of the component found in the first experiment was affected by the amount of binocular disparity. Both in Cz and Pz channels, the peak amplitude of P3 component was much lower in 3D rather than in 2D conditions, and it decreased as the amount of binocular disparity increased. The subjective 3D visual fatigue also increased with the amount of binocular disparity. These results imply that the peak amplitude of P3 component at Cz and Pz channels can be used as an index of 3D visual fatigue.

|

KJSES 15(1) 29-36, 2012 |
ABSTRACT
This study aims to analyse the research trend of the participants in Emotional Science in Korea and to suggest a desirable direction of research. I analysed the 1,262 articles published in Korean Journal of the Science of Emotion and Sensibility from 2000 to 2011 according to fields of study and keywords. The findings from the study are as follows. In the fields of study regarding Clothing Design, Psychology, Medicine, Visual Media, Brain Science they are still the top rated categories amongst participants. With the participation of Industrial Engineering and Ergonomics they have shown a meaningful difference depending on governmental support such as G7 Project. The problem with Industrial Design is that the majority of studies have been performed alone, and they have many keywords which are not related with Emotional Science. However, 31 new fields of study have been added to the research making the findings more desirable considering that Emotional Science is typical interdisciplinary filed of study. I hope that this study will provide basic data which can be used to promote the interdisciplinary research between the different fields of study in order to generate significant synergy.

ABSTRACT
We tested the effects of endogenous attention and reorienting on the performance of detection task. In the classic detection paradigm of Posner and Cohen (1980), performance on target detection is measured, where target appears either on the same or difference spatial location of cue stimulus after brief period of SOA (stimulus onset asynchrony). In this study, we induced exogenous attention by manipulating predictability of cue for target, and also induced reorientation by inserting additional (reorienting) cue between initial cue and target. Experiment 1 had three conditions of reorienting speed: Early, middle, and late. Facilitation and IOR (inhibition of return) occurred in different forms depending on SOA and reorienting speed, but we were not able to discover interpretable pattern in the results. However, reanalysis of early reorienting condition revealed that facilitation and IOR occurred in a crossed manner where short SOA found facilitation and long SOA did IOR, the typical results of simple detection task. Experiment 2 collected additional data to replicate the results in early reorienting condition of experiment 1. The results obtained that facilitation occurred with short SOA and IOR with long SOA. These results contrast with those of Wright and Richard (2000) where they reported elimination of IOR when cue had predictability of target locations. These results suggest that additional cue (here, orienting cue), which rapidly appears before extinction of IOR by prior cue, brings about double IOR. The present research demonstrates that even when attention is allocated to certain location via endogenous mechanism, rapidly repeating cues in certain location maximizes IOR that offsets the effects of endogenous attention to the same location.

The Effect of Image Realism and Learner`s Expertise on Persona Effect of Pedagogical Agent
|

KJSES 15(1) 47-56, 2012 |
ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study is to test the effect of pedagogical agent realism and expertise on persona effect. There were two perspectives of the pedagogical agents` social interaction. Self-identification hypothesis argues that complexity of agent image is better to increase social interaction. Subjective identification insists that simplified image is more helpful to facilitate social interaction. However, from the cognitive load theory perspective, learners` expertise can be a major factor to determine persona effect. Sixty-eight college students (male=19 and female=49) participated. The independent variables were the degree of realism of pedagogical agent (detailed vs. simplified image) and the expertise (high prior knowledge group vs. low prior knowledge group). The dependant variables were comprehension test and the agent persona instrument (API). There was no significant difference in comprehension test score; however, there were significant interaction effect on the most constructs of API: 1) facilitating of learning, 2) credible, and 3) human-like. The follow-up analysis of simple main effect revealed that high expertise group showed significantly higher perception of the three construct with high realism of pedagogical agent. The results of study show that learners` expertise plays a key role of perception of persona effect.

KJSES 15(1) 57-64, 2012 |
ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to compare the visual sensibility of red shirts in university students of two countries, Korea and China in order to suggest the color planning for shirts. Seven tonal red shirts` visual sensibility and preferences were evaluated by the students of Korea and from China in the sense of sight. Evaluated data were analyzed by using frequency analysis, average, factor analysis and t-test. The visual sensibility of red shirts was classified into three factors: sporty, romantic and classic. Those factors of visual sensibility showed a significant difference according to nationality and gender. The Chinese students had a more sporty feel to the strong tone, and a more classic feel to the dark tone than the Korean students. The deep tone red shirts was reputed to be more romantic by the Korean students, but the light tone and the pale tone were considered more romantic by the Chinese students. Meanwhile, the effects of nationality and gender on seven tone of preferences for red shirts was significantly differed.

KJSES 15(1) 65-72, 2012 |
ABSTRACT
People receive information through various media, such as newspapers, TV, radio, magazines, or internet, etc. In particular, through the development of the internet and smart-phone they can interact with media and receive information in real time via handheld devices. However the types of information and media could affect the reliability of news information. In this study, it was the main interest how the usability in the new media with the interactivity, such as a desktop, tablet, and smart-phone affects the user`s evaluation on the contents displayed by the different new media. Therefore, the present study was conducted to investigate the effect of the usability from the different display size of media and the different contents of articles on the reliability of information empirically. The results showed that the contents of the articles interacting with different devices affect the reliability of information. These findings propose the considerations on the effects of characteristic usability of the new media in the stages of the development of the media contents.

KJSES 15(1) 87-96, 2012 |
ABSTRACT
This paper proposes a Image retrieval system that searches the closest images to the user`s emotional need and displays images with higher ratings of color harmony from Moon-Spencer`s Color Harmony Theory first. Once an emotional adjective is placed, the system searches for images with colors that contain more elements derived from Aesthetic Measure results and displays in such order. In order to test reliability of the proposed emotion retrieval method based on Moon-Spencer`s Color Harmony Theory, this study compared the order of Aesthetic Measure results with the user satisfaction ratings using 200 sample images. The analysis demonstrated that the participants` average satisfaction on 15 emotion adjectives selected for the study was 5.0 on a 7-point Likert scale. Correlation analyses were performed to test the consistency the orders between Aesthetic Measure values and user satisfaction ratings. Positive correlations above R=.5 were observed in all 14 emotion words except "Clear". These findings prove the potential of the proposed emotion retrieval system based on Moon-Spencer`s Color Harmony Theory to effectively reflect user emotion in such visual stimulus search as image database.
