A Direction of Emotion Design for Future MP3 Players by Trend Analysis

ABSTRACT
It is very important that design based on preference of consumers who continuously change. Therefore, the method that can decide on the design concept which a consumer can prefer in future points of time that a design is released is necessary. There may be various ways to decide a design concept, but trend analysis is one of the best ways to be able to satisfy consumer preference. The purpose of this study is to provide a process that can give a direction of MP3 player design oriented consumer emotion. For the purpose, we considered about trend analysis as the ways that can present the design direction that can grasp a change of continuous preference, and a consumer can prefer with early bases in future points of time of a consumer. In this empirical research, we decided on design elements and levels of the elements after collecting 228 MP3 players released from 2000 to 2007, and carried out trend analysis through homogeneity analysis by SPSS program. In the result, we knew that future consumers also will regard emotional experience consumption as important. So, MP3 player design will be developed into consumer emotion-oriented design. We predict 4 trends for a future MP3 player design. 1. Development of high-priced MP3 player with various multimedia functions. 2. Development of MP3 player with basic functions. 3. Development of new convergence products with MP3 function. 4. Development of new MP3 player based on flash memory. If designers can infer a future MP3 player design from this design trend results, the probability that can occupy competitive advantage in their competitions will be high. Therefore this study can be useful.

Effects of users and interface agents` gender on users` assessment of the agent

ABSTRACT
This study examined effects of gender and empathic emotional expression of an anthropomorphic interface agent on users` assessment of the agent. In addition, it examined effects of gender and emotional expression regardless of whether visual fidelity of the agent. In Study 1, The agents were manipulated by photographs of human face. The agent expressed empathic emotion by making an other-oriented emotional response congruent with another`s perceived welfare. Subjects participated in a task with the agent and then they assessed the agent by rating interpersonal assessment scale. The result reported their preference to the female agent. In addition, they tended to make positive assessment to the agent of opposite gender. In the study 2, gender and expressed emotion of the agent with low fidelity was manipulated. Subjects participated in a task with the agent and then they assessed the agent by rating the same interpersonal assessment scale as study 1. The result reported their preference to the female agent. In addition, they preferred the agent expressing empathic emotion to the agent expressing self-oriented emotion or no emotion. Though the agent had low visual fidelity, its gender and expressed empathic emotion could make a significant effect on users` assessment.

Height perception of Large airplane pilots during Landing flare

ABSTRACT
Pilots of large airplanes have to land their airplanes with insufficient visual information because of high approach speed, high vertical velocity and high location or altitude of the cockpits from the runway intending to touch down. This study verifies that, due to the insufficient information, large airplane pilots can`t exactly perceive height of their airplanes during the flare. Study 1 explored whether it`s possible for the pilots to accurately perceive height with the static visual cues only. We showed them pictures of the runway taken from the pilot`s pionts of view and asked them to assess the height of the airplanes. They determined exact height of the airplanes at the height of 85 feet, but they could not, at lower than 55 feet which is the flare preparation altitude. Study 2 explored whether it`s possible for the pilots to accurately perceive height when dynamic cues were added to the static visual cues. We showed them videos of the runway taken from the pilot`s pionts of view. With more cues they determined exact height of the airplanes at the height of 50 feet, but they could not, at the altitude of lower than 30 feet which is the flare altitude. As experience is believed to be a major factor which affects interpretation of the visual cues, we compared the accuracy of the assessment of the experienced captions and that of the in-experienced first officers. We found there was no significant difference between them.

Perceived Controllability of the Ubiquitous Computing Devices as a Function of Design Familiarity and Complexity

ABSTRACT
Ubiquitous computing environment is the new surroundings, currently being realized by modern technology. Since previous usability tests are not suitable for this new technological environment, new research on psychological factors needs to be conducted. The evaluation of service scenarios also will be required in tandem with traditional usability tests of operation devices. Consequently, this study classified usability factors from a scenario perspective and was conducted with a focus on the psychological elements of controllability from a mechanical perspective. Study 1 reclassified the factors of existing usability tests according to similarity and application scenarios, and ten important groups of factors were newly created. Study 2 focused specifically on the design side of a device and showed that the degree of familiarity with the ubiquitous computing device and its complexity brought about a difference in perceived controllability of the device.

A study on developing color braille system for the blind

ABSTRACT
This Braille System for color recognition was designed for those who have lost eye sight after birth. This system was based on the idea that these people had the understanding of colours before they went blind. So when they touch the braille, they can feel and recognize colours. This system adopted the Munsell`s hue circle system which is used worldwide for its simple way of colour identification. It also used some texture to help people in need identify the brightness and saturation of colors. In spite of its simple structure, this system has a range of up to 153 different colours. For a friendly use, minimal changes were made by modifying location and height of dots of the braille system which blind people are already accustomed to. Because of it`s simplicity, this colour braille system can be used easily and broadly. I believe that many acquired blind people can feel colour again through using this system and get benefits of social and cultural communication.

Studies of the Efficiency of Wearable Input Interface

ABSTRACT
The desktop interface is not suitable for the environment in which mobile devices are used commonly with moving, because much attention should be paid for it. And the miniaturizing of mobile devices increases the workload for using them, makes the operation speeds lower and makes more errors. So the study of appropriate level of the input interface for this changing environment is needed. In the aspect of mobile devices` input style and the complexity of the menu hierarchy, this study will look for the way to decrease the workload when doing some primary tasks and using mobile devices simultaneously with moving. The input style was classified into gesture input style, button input style, and pointing input style. The accuracy and speed were measured when doing dual tasks, including a menu searching task and a figure memory task, through one input style of three. By Changing the level of menu hierarchy in the menu searching task, the accuracy of task execution was examined. These Experiments were done in standing state and moving state. In both state the pointing input style was the highest in the accuracy of task execution but the slowest in the speed. In contrast, the gesture input style was not high in the accuracy but the fastest in the speed. This fact shows that the gesture input style is suitable for the condition needed for speedy processing rather than accurate execution when moving.

Alcohol Craving in Subjects with Alcohol Use Disorders in Response to Alcohol Cues

ABSTRACT
Initially, this study was to develop reliable and effective alcohol-associated visual cues. Alcoholic picture cues were chosen from the Normative Appetitive Picture System (NAPS). Additional images consisted of Korean beer and mild liquor was pre-tested to select the pictures that would induce craving most intensely. The images that recorded the highest scores on a scale were chosen through the pre-test. And then, the reliability and validity were examined for the selected alcohol cues from NAPS and pre-test via another psychometric test. Secondly, the study was to investigate differences in craving between subjects with alcohol use disorders (AUDs) and non-alcoholic control subjects when exposed to the alcohol visual cues. Alcohol abusers with AUD (n=9) and demographically similar non-abusers (n=9) participated in this study. After given 5cc of alcohol, subjects were exposed to different types of stimuli (i.e., alcohol, nonalcoholic beverage, and visual control pictures and one rest (cross-hair)). Craving levels were rated through self-report on a Likert scale immediately after the presentation of visual cues. Results showed statistically significant differences between the AUD group and the control group in the Obsessive Compulsive Drinking Scale (OCDS) scores, pre-sip and post-sip alcohol craving. Also, the AUD group showed significantly a higher level of craving during alcohol cues compared to the control group. In conclusion, alcohol craving induced by alcohol cues among subjects with AUD was found to be different from that of non-abusers.

A Study on Sound Design to Improve Regional Image -Focused on the Jeonju Area-

ABSTRACT
Recently, sound design is being made by corporations for the production as well as for marketing and web with consideration of image of productions and attributes to improve corporational image through the design of melody which would remain in users. And sound is becoming an important factor to establish the identity of each area such as life environment and public facilities. At present, our local governments are promoting active business like as CIP to improve urban image but there is a limit to establish identity as the result of its partial focus on visual sense or insufficient recognition about it. Jeonju, the place of sound, has many festivals and great meetings related with sound but it has not identity in the sense of sound. So the purpose of this study is to suggest the condition of sound which has the trait of Jeonju and to provide data for the trait to be used as a necessary element to establish identity in order to activate regional image. For the method of research, sampling Korean beautiful 100 sounds among the natural sounds of residents` most favorite as the samples of sound to search the sound of regional image. Selecting favorite samples among them and analyzed the factors through the questionnaire on the image of adjective in each sample. As the result of analysis, it has been shown that the factor of sound to reveal trait of Jeonju is the image of bright, delight, andcozywithconsiderationofharmony, dynamics, contrast, and culture. For this study is to provide data so it can be used to actively establish and identify the local image.

Development of High Sensible Fabrics Using Worsted Yarn Drawing Technology

ABSTRACT
Recently, the 『Optim』(R) which is the wool fibre with high lustre developed by CSIRO in Australia is imported and commercialized as a high sensible fabrics for garment. But the price of this 『Optim』(R) fibre is very high so material demand and supply is not smooth. This study is aiming to develop the drawing technology of the worsted yarn with washable function, luster and low production cost. For this purpose, drawing yarns are made using developed drawing machine and high sensible fabrics are woven using this yarns, and various physical properties of the fabric specimen are measured and analysed with garment characteristics such as sewability and formability. The final objective of this study is seemed to be achieved by making the high sensible fabrics using drawing worsted yarns with high lustre such as 『Optim』(R) fibre.

Similarity Evaluation on Images of Textile Print Design for Digital Library

ABSTRACT
This research focuses on similarity evaluation of images according to tones of images. Color space of images were converted RGB color space into HSI color space. The information entropy criteria has been taken for evaluating similarity of images for digital library. The similarity was then calculated by combining correlation coefficients and information entropy. Those two values are further analyzed with a relation to human sensibility.
