ABSTRACT
This study examined the effect of intentional thought avoidance(i.e., thought suppression and thought substitution) using “Think and No Think” task. Two syllable words were selected, and recall test was performed with a single subject group. recall accuracy of them was measured in two recall conditions(cue recall and target recall) and four training conditions(thought, thought suppression, thought substitution, and baseline). The results showed that recall accuracy in cue recall condition was better than in target recall condition, regardless of training conditions, and recall accuracy in thought condition was better than in other training conditions, regardless of recall conditions. Also there was significant interaction between recall and training conditions: For thought suppression. there was no difference between two recall conditions, whereas for thought substitution, recall accuracy in cue recall condition was better than in target condition. These findings indicate that thought avoidance strategies, including both thought suppression and thought substitution, are effective in avoiding the specific thought intentionally, and thought suppression and thought substitution could be applied by different mechanism.

ABSTRACT
This study investigates the buying behavior pertaining to Japanese brands according to the degree of patriotism of consumers in their 20s. A survey of 235 university students was conducted; the survey questioned the basic purchasing attitudes of consumers in their 20s regarding outerwear and underwear and then surveyed the purchasing attitudes regarding U brand’s (representative Japanese brand) outerwear and underwear. To detect the correlation between patriotism and U brand purchases, this study asked questions about patriotism and investigated basic personal information. The research results were as follows. First, there was a significant difference in consumer’s purchasing attitude toward outerwear and underwear. When of consumers who are in their 20s purchase outerwear, its design was the most important factor, whereas when purchasing underwear, functionality was the most crucial factor. Second, it was confirmed that consumer’s attitudes toward U brand’s outerwear and underwear differed. Although the evaluation of U brand’s outerwear design was not positive, the consumer tended to be satisfied with the price. U brand’s score concerning the functionality of underwear products received a slightly positive response. Third, a total of 235 respondents were divided into a high- and low-patriotism-group based on questions about patriotism. There were significant differences in their attitudes toward clothing and consumer’s purchasing behavior at U brand. Highly patriotic consumers thought negatively about U brand outerwear products in terms of price and product quality than low patriotic consumers; however, there was no significant difference only regarding design evaluation. For underwear products, low patriotic consumers were more positive about the price, design, and functionality of U brand products than high patriotic consumers.

KJSES 24(1) 25-36, 2021 DOI : 10.14695/KJSOS.2021.24.1.25 |
ABSTRACT
This study examines the characteristics of public design evaluation and sensibility evaluation of the media facade, Daejeon Skyroad. The subjects were asked to watch the Daejeon Skyroad media facade video and then respond to the sensibility evaluation items comprising emotional vocabulary and the public design evaluation items of the media facade. The mean comparison of the public design evaluation results of Daejeon Skyroad with demographic variables was conducted, factor structure of the emotional vocabulary was derived, and correlation with the public design evaluation factors was conducted using the emotional vocabulary included in each factor. The results indicated that public design evaluation items showed some differences and trends depending on the subjects’ gender, age, and whether they experienced media facade. Meanwhile, 14 vocabulary words were composed of four-factor structures, and “comfortable-uncomfortable” was found to be a common relevant emotional vocabulary across all public design evaluation factors. This suggests that sensibilities that are perceived as comfort subjectively are the primary value of the media facade, Daejeon Skyroad, as a public design. However, the value as a public design can be further improved if the Daejeon Skyroad is operated as a policy considering that gender and age are reflected.

KJSES 24(1) 37-44, 2021 DOI : 10.14695/KJSOS.2021.24.1.37 |
ABSTRACT
A study was conducted on the effects of improving concentration by obscuring the peripheral vision using a blindfold that only covers the left and right sides of the field of view. The blindfold was trapezoidal in shape (5 × 4.8 cm in length and width) and was fixed to the left and right sides of the glasses with fixing clips. The material was a black-colored polypropylene (PP) and weighed 2.3 g including the clip. Qualitative and quantitative evaluations were performed on 50 healthy college students during the 15 days of using a blindfold. The qualitative analysis was performed utilizing a questionnaire regarding the improvement of concentration and the structure of the blindfold. EEG was measured while watching a learning video that required attention for quantitative analysis, and signal power and ERD/S analyses were performed for the mid β band (15-20 Hz) at the F4 position, which was the frontal lobe. The results showed that 40 of the 50 people reported improved concentration when they wore a vision shield, and 80% of the total subjects found it to be effective. From the quantitative evaluation, the ERS peak (p = 0.023) and the ERD + ERS peak value showed a significant difference (p = 0.017). In conclusion, concentration still improved even if only the left and right visual fields were used. Thus, it is expected that blindfolding could be used in various environments that require concentration.

KJSES 24(1) 45-58, 2021 DOI : 10.14695/KJSOS.2021.24.1.45 |
ABSTRACT
Aggressive behavior triggered by the tendency to become angry is generating various social problems. To combat these various social issues, it is important to recognize the role that empathy plays in preventing those with trait-anger from becoming aggressive. More specifically, the hypothesis that empathic concern and perspective taking would mitigate the association between trait-anger and aggression was examined through this study. 329 college students participated in a survey containing questions related to trait-anger, aggression, empathic concern and perspective taking. The results showed that empathic concern moderated the association between trait-anger and aggression, whereas perspective taking did not. That is, those who are emotionally empathetic do not act aggressively easily even if their trait-anger is high; while those who are cognitively empathetic struggle to reduce the likelihood of their trait-anger leading to aggressive behavior. The result of this study indicates that emotional empathy was more useful than cognitive empathy in preventing those with trait-anger leading to aggressive behaviors. The implications, limitations and future directions of this study were also considered and presented as well.

KJSES 24(1) 59-72, 2021 DOI : 10.14695/KJSOS.2021.24.1.59 |
ABSTRACT
Concepts and categories offer the basis for inference pertaining to unobserved features. Prior research on category-based induction that used blank properties has suggested that similarity between categories and features explains feature inference (Rips, 1975; Osherson et al., 1990). However, it was shown by later research that prior knowledge had a large influence on category-based inference and cases were reported where similarity effects completely disappeared. Thus, this study tested category-based feature inference when features are connected in a causal chain and proposed a feature inference model that predicts participants’ inference ratings. Each participant learned a category with four features connected in a causal chain and then performed feature inference tasks for an unobserved feature in various exemplars of the category. The results revealed nonindependence, that is, the features not only linked directly to the target feature but also to those screened-off by other feature nodes and affected feature inference (a violation of the causal Markov condition). Feature inference model of causal model theory (Sloman, 2005) explained nonindependence by predicting the effects of directly linked features and indirectly related features. Indirect features equally affected participants’ inference regardless of causal distance, and the model predicted smaller effects regarding causally distant features.

Autobiographical Memory of Childhood and Prosocial Behaviors
|

KJSES 24(1) 73-90, 2021 DOI : 10.14695/KJSOS.2021.24.1.73 |
ABSTRACT
Previous studies have demonstrated that childhood memories can impact self-concepts. However, scant research has been conducted to determine whether and how the activation of childhood memories relates to the motivation of prosocial behaviors. Thus, this study investigated whether childhood memories facilitated prosocial behaviors through implicitly activating moral purity and how differently an abstract (vs. a concrete) construal level of autobiographical memories evoke prosocial intentions. According to the results of Study 1, the participants in the experimental condition of childhood memories were more motivated to perform prosocial behaviors than those in the controlled condition of recalling recent mundane activities. In the experimental condition, moral purity was activated more strongly than in the control condition. Study 2 demonstrated that participants in the “concrete” condition of childhood memories tended to the lower levels of prosocial motivation than those in the “abstract” condition wherein they were counting and describing good deeds from their childhood in detail. These results indicate that different construal levels (abstract vs. concrete) can mediate the relationship between childhood memories and prosocial behaviors. This study contributes to extending previous research regarding the determinants of motivating prosocial behaviors in cognitive processes.

ABSTRACT
This study explored users’ emotional states identified from the wake-up words ―“Hi, KIA!”―using a machine learning algorithm considering the user interface of passenger cars’ voice. We targeted four emotional states, namely, excited, angry, desperate, and neutral, and created a total of 12 emotional scenarios in the context of car driving. Nine college students participated and recorded sentences as guided in the visualized scenario. The wake-up words were extracted from whole sentences, resulting in two data sets. We used the soundgen package and svmRadial method of caret package in open source-based R code to collect acoustic features of the recorded voices and performed machine learning-based analysis to determine the predictability of the modeled algorithm. We compared the accuracy of wake-up words (60.19%: 22%~81%) with that of whole sentences (41.51%) for all nine participants in relation to the four emotional categories. Accuracy and sensitivity performance of individual differences were noticeable, while the selected features were relatively constant. This study provides empirical evidence regarding the potential application of the wake-up words in the practice of emotion-driven user experience in communication between users and the artificial intelligence system.

KJSES 24(1) 105-114, 2021 DOI : 10.14695/KJSOS.2021.24.1.105 |
ABSTRACT
This study determines the differences between Korean female university students and their Chinese counterparts residing in Korea by evaluating the subjective sensation and tactile preference in fabrics for casual shirts. Seven types of white causal shirt fabrics were selected as specimens from those available in spring and autumn shirt collection. The fabrics were made from various fibers (cotton 100%, polyester 100%, flax 100%, polyester 80%/cotton 20%, polyester 65%/cotton 35%, polyester 50%/cotton 45%/spandex 5%, and polyester 50%/modal 50%). Forty Korean and Chinese female university students subjectively assessed the subjective sensation of fabrics used for casual shirts. Participants were asked to observe the seven types of fabrics and complete the questionnaire. The subjective sensation to be assessed for white casual shirt fabrics was classified into the following four factors: smoothness, lightness, softness, and stretchiness. Subjective sensation factors showed partially significant differences by nationality. Korean female students evaluated cotton fabric as being light, whereas their Chinese counterparts evaluated the polyester/cotton/spandex blended fabric as light. Korean female students evaluated polyester/modal blended fabric as being stretchable. The tactile preference for fiber composition of the fabrics showed partially significant differences by nationality. Korean female students preferred cotton 80%/polyester 20% blended fabric, polyester 50%/cotton 45%/spandex 5% blended fabric, and flax 100% fabric. The subjective sensation of the fabrics had different effects on preferences by nationality. Smoothness and softness had positive effects on preferences for the fabrics of Korean students. However, smoothness, softness, and stretchiness had positive effects on the preferences of Chinese students. The subjective sensation and tactile preference for casual shirt fabrics showed a difference between Korean female students and their Chinese counterparts. Therefore, when planning casual shirt fabrics for female university students, it is necessary to reflect on these differences in subjective sensation and tactile preference.
