ABSTRACT
This paper is designed to investigate the attributes of sound and emotion resided in traditional Eastern thought by looking into acoustic theories such as Sunguarakron (聲有哀樂論) in Akgi(樂記), Sungmuaerakron(聲無哀樂論) of Haegang(혜康) and Akhakgebum(樂學軌範), Chongiron(天機論) in Choson(朝鮮) dynasty. Six types of emotions, namely sadness, pleasure, happiness, anger, respect, and, affection (哀心, 樂心, 喜心, 怒心, 敬心, 愛心) which is related with sounds was closely reviewed through Akgi(樂記). Also attributes of sounds such as loudness, sharpness, pitch, roughness, fluctuation strength and pleasantness was corresponded with plain & complicated(單複), pitch(高비), good & bad(善惡) slow & fast(舒疾), loud & quiet(猛靜) respectively. In addition to this, this paper is narrowed down that the basic ideas about sound and emotions of Choson(朝鮮) confucian scholar was based on theory of music and rhythm on Akgi(樂記). Furthermore, the relationship between expressed sound and emotions which was revealed in Chongiron(天機論) has been examined. Finally, various applied research and studies will be promoted through this study, because this study will provide foundation which supports sounds and emotions of Eastern.

ABSTRACT
Emotion science is one of the rapidly expanding engineering/scientific disciplines which has a major impact on human society. Such growing interests in emotion science and engineering owe the recent trend that various academic fields are being merged. In this paper we review the recent techniques in the measuring the emotion related elements and applications which include animal model system to investigate the neural network and behaviour, artificial nose/neuronal chip for in-depth understanding of sensing the outer stimuli, metabolic controlling using emotional stimulant such as sounds. In particular, microfabrication techniques made it possible to construct nano/micron scale sensing parts/chips to accommodate the olfactory cells and neuron cells and gave us a new opportunities to investigate the emotion precisely. Recent developments in the measurement techniques will be able to help combine the social sciences and natural sciences, and consequently expand the scope of studies.

ABSTRACT
A study is presented that examines the effect of personality on preference and purchase intention of positive and negative novelty design products. Participants evaluated their preference and purchase intention on 18 design products including positive and negative novelty design products. A cute Scream character was created as a positive novelty design and a skeleton Mickey character was used as a negative one. We measured extroversion, neuroticism, and visual product aesthetics as individual traits. The results shows that people, of course, prefer(and want to buy) the positive novelty design product to the negative novelty design product. Only in the case of the negative novelty design product, the more neurotic people is, the more they prefer it. Also, among the people who like the negative novelty design product, introvert ones are likely to purchase it but extroverted ones are not. These findings imply that personality plays an important role in liking and purchasing negative novelty design product.

A New Approach to Naturalness for Still Images-Depending On TV Genre
|

KJSES 13(1) 251-258, 2010 |
ABSTRACT
`Naturalness` is the important "ness" which is a key factor in image quality assessment. `Naturalness` is a representive factor depending on the context of the image which arouses different emotions. The Image Quality Circle was split into two steps. The first step is predicting the visual perceptual attribute which are lightness, colourfulness, hue and contrast. The next step is SSE which is dependent to image contents. In this study the image contents are grouped in genres. The images were rendered using four different colour attributes which are lightness, contrast, colourfulness and hue. Using a scale, the score of image quality and SSE was asked to each participant for all rendered images. A seven-point category scale of increasing amount of "ness" is used as a quantitative adjectives sequence. The image quality model was built by combining the SSEs for each scene. The SSEs, where vividness is common, are considered as independent variables to predict the image quality score. Then the vividness model was built using colour attributes as variables to predict the vividness of each scene (genre). Vividness is an important factor of naturalness which the meaning is different for all scenes that links the naturalness and image quality. The vividness meaning was different for each scene (genre). Therefore, the colour attributes that express the vividness would depend on the image content.

KJSES 13(1) 259-268, 2010 |
ABSTRACT
This modern society is said to be more typical of an emotional society. In such a society, emotional design adds value to products, hence bringing about value-enhanced products. Despite many claims of little substance about emotional design, there have been only a few researches that have identified what criteria to be applied to distinguish between emotional products and generic products or even have clearly defined what emotional products are. This leads to a clear need for providing more definite criteria for defining and classifying design elements useful and available for users. To fill the gap, the purpose of this study is, first, to explore the relationship between evaluation elements for creative design and emotional design, and, based on that, identify some of the most importantly valued elements, and secondly, to examine how the images importantly used for expression relate to creativity evaluation elements according to classified types of design. In this study, chosen products were presented to selected users so that they can choose what they think possesses emotional design elements. Then the products so chosen were classified according to design type for examination of their respective relationship with creativity evaluation elements. In addition, the identification was performed of perceived design images about the selected products and the relationship between those images and creativity evaluation elements. This study is expected to provide a chance to be aware of the fact that essential creativity evaluation elements can vary depending on changing times, environments, and users, and as well, to offer an insight into what images design should be possessive of for it to be preferred by consumers.

KJSES 13(1) 269-278, 2010 |
ABSTRACT
Today`s Virtual Reality(VR) technology has become considerably more affordable and sophisticated with rapidly advancing computer technology. Photo-realistic visual representations along with real-time interactivity are now achievable without special programing knowledge and expensive equipment. The purpose of this paper is to establish how simple, credible user testing methods based on VR simulations can be utilized to improve design decision making towards more sensible design solutions for end-users. Results of a case study demonstrate the value of potential user-testing feedback in a simulated 3D virtual service space, i.e., restaurant interior. User feedback from the VR simulation includes preferences in table location, privacy, and values of seating preferred tables. A new design framework incorporating an empirical testing method for service spaces is presented. The overall design process, the development of the VE, and the user testing method and findings are discussed. This study provides useful guidances for future efforts in the areas where such technology may benefit to understand end-user feedbacks in design process.

KJSES 13(1) 279-284, 2010 |
ABSTRACT
This paper surveys basic research for data base system of the fabric structural design. For this purpose, the weave density coefficients of the worsted and cotton fabrics are analysed and discussed with cover factors suggested by Prof. Walz and Picanol company. And the relationship between weave density coefficients and cover factors of the worsted and cotton woven fabrics was analysed and discussed with weave pattern and yarn count. Finally, the process shrinkages of dyeing and finishing processes according to the weave density coefficients of the worsted and cotton fabrics were analysed and discussed as a preliminary study for the data base system of the fabric structural design. As a result, the density coefficients, K values of the worsted and cotton fabrics were ranged from 600 to 1000, and the weave density coefficients of those fabrics are ranged from 0.4 to 0.8 and from 0.2 to 1.0, respectively. The finishing shrinkages for the worsted fabrics are ranged from 2% to 10%, and for cotton fabrics, it was from 2% to 20%. The weave density coefficients of the worsted and cotton fabrics could be distributed according to the looms, weave pattern and weaving and finishing shrinkages as a concept of the data base for the fabric structural design.
