ABSTRACT
This study examines potential growth and different perspectives on green-walls, which are being re-evaluated recently. The aim is to identify the viewer preferences concerning the walls by collecting a wide spectrum of information to create an interior design related comprehensive and intellectual database. Also based on this proposition, choosing a green surface of indoor wall as a specific example stimulus, identifying a relationship betweeationsviewer`s preference factors. The relationship will formulate detailed and absolute qualities, which will reach potential areas that the green walls can be widely applied in. As a result of a factor analysis, the viewers classified into the 3 factors as is pleasant, gorgeous and rich about the stimulus. Preferred key factors, which are closely related to emotional image language, were; cool, tidy, comfortable and beautiful. The common factors in preferred design stimulus, in order of importance are color>elements> image/form/plants. Specific levels of design factors according to relevance are contrast>furniture> modern>central/ creeper foliage plants. In the meantime, this study is leading the process of quantitative measurement of green-walls to a new design direction and it is critical to consistently experimenting to back up the theory with solid evidence.

KJSES 14(4) 605-616, 2011 |
ABSTRACT
The present study examined memory accuracy for faces with positive, negative and neutral emotional expressions to test whether their emotional content can affect visual working memory (VWM) performance. Participants remembered a set of face pictures in which facial expressions of the faces were randomly assigned from pleasant, unpleasant and neutral emotional categories. Participants` task was to report presence or absence of an emotion change in the faces by comparing the remembered set against another set of test faces displayed after a short delay. The change detection accuracies of the pleasant, unpleasant and neutral face conditions were compared under two memory exposure duration of 500ms vs. 1000ms. Under the duration of 500ms, the accuracy in the pleasant condition was higher than both unpleasant and neutral conditions. However the difference disappeared when the duration was extended to 1000ms. The results indicate that a positive facial expression can improve VWM accuracy relative to the negative or positive expressions especially when there is not enough time for forming durable VWM representations.

KJSES 14(4) 617-626, 2011 |
ABSTRACT
Home appliance proposes the experience of new lifestyle to consumers, together with digital technology-applied highly advanced functions, beyond its natural quality like the basic function of reducing the burden of housework. However, under the current circumstances that populations are rapidly aging, the number of elderly consumers, who feel it inconvenient to smoothly use even the basic function of home appliance, is increasing in proportion to populations. Therefore, the necessity for developing home appliance with improved usability in consideration of the elderly is rising up. This study analyzed the elderly`s pattern of using home appliance and illustrated the procedure of their using home appliance, putting its focus on the home appliance that the elderly highly depend on in keeping their daily life and that they feel it inconvenient to control. And based on the illustrated procedure, this paper substituted various kinds of home appliance that were not surveyed by this study and found out 4 user behavioral models for home appliance. Same as the concept of universal design, product designs, which are convenient to use by the elderly whose physical functions are reduced, are expected acceptable to various user classes. The found user behavioral models purport to give references to design process for product planning and design solutions.

ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study is to develop the multi-modal interaction system. This system provides realistic and an immersive experience through multi-modal interaction. The system recognizes user behavior, intention, and attention, which overcomes the limitations of uni-modal interaction. The multi-modal interaction system is based upon gesture interaction methods, intuitive gesture interaction and attention evaluation technology. The gesture interaction methods were based on the sensors that were selected to analyze the accuracy of the 3-D gesture recognition technology using meta-analysis. The elements of intuitive gesture interaction were reflected through the results of experiments. The attention evaluation technology was developed by the physiological signal analysis. This system is divided into 3 modules; a motion cognitive system, an eye gaze detecting system, and a bio-reaction sensing system. The first module is the motion cognitive system which uses the accelerator sensor and flexible sensors to recognize hand and finger movements of the user. The second module is an eye gaze detecting system that detects pupil movements and reactions. The final module consists of a bio-reaction sensing system or attention evaluating system which tracks cardiovascular and skin temperature reactions. This study will be used for the development of realistic digital entertainment technology.

KJSES 14(4) 637-644, 2011 |
ABSTRACT
The purpose of this research is to provide objective information about Korean and Chinese`s sensitivity and preference among various Korean fonts, and offer guidelines for using it. Firstly, to analyze Korean fonts in objective way, We compared about image of Korean fonts to Chinese who feel unfamiliar with Korean letter, and proved how different from Korean`s opinion. Secondly, one compared preference in particular fonts between Korean and Chinese. Through the factor analysis, the results are as follows. First, Korean and Chinese feel the same about the two groups of factors. There are differences in the rank, but the majority of fonts are included in the same group. It can be concluded that both Korean and Chinese has similar sensitivity about Korean fonts. Second, while Korean and Chinese decides preference on the familiarity, Chinese who are not familiar with Korean letters, have tendency to prefer calligraphic font which they have been using in the Chinese letter.

KJSES 14(4) 645-652, 2011 |
ABSTRACT
This study examined changes of both psychological and physiological emotional responses according to change of the PMV (predicted mean vote) in the heating and the cooling air conditions. For this purpose, the changes of PMV were induced by the heating and cooling operations of the HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) systems. In addition, positive/negative and arousal/relaxation were measured as the participant`s psychological emotional responses, and HR (heart rate) was measured as the participant`s physiological emotional responses. As a result, in same range of the PMV, both psychological and physiological emotional-responses were changed by air conditioning. It is suggested that occupant`s emotional responses would depend on the operational conditions of heating and cooling in indoor thermal environments, and both psychological and physiological emotional response should be considered when occupants try to match the indoor thermal environments to their thermal expectations.

ABSTRACT
As technology in 3D industry has rapidly advanced, a lot of studies primarily focusing on visual function and cognition have become vigorous. However, studies on effect of 3D visual fatigue on autonomic nervous system have not less been conducted. Thus, this study was to identify and determine the effect that might have a negative influence on sympathetic nervous system, parasympathetic nervous system, and cardiovascular system. Fifteen undergraduates (female: 9, mean age: 22.53±2.55) participated and were sat on a comfortable chair, viewing a 3D content during about 1 hour. Cardiac responses like SDNN(standard deviation of RR intervals), RMS-SD(root mean squared successive difference), and HF/LF ratios extracted from the measured PPG(Photo-PlethysmoGram) before viewing 3D were compared to those after viewing 3D. The results showed that after subjects watched the 3D, responses in sympathetic nervous system and parasympathetic nervous system were activated and deactivated, respectively relative to those before watching the 3D. The results showed that HF/LF ratio, Ln(LF), and Ln(HF) after viewing 3D were significantly reduced relative to those before viewing 3D. No significant effects were observed in SDNN and RMS-SD. Results obtained in this study showed that visual fatigue induced by watching 3D adversely influenced autonomic nervous system, and thereby reduced heart rate variability causing sympathetic nervous acceleration.

|

KJSES 14(4) 663-674, 2011 |
ABSTRACT
Two experiments were conducted to examine how additional dotted lines and peripheral stimulus to the cafe wall illusion affect on the degree of perceived tilt (amount of illusion) and confidency of illusionary perception. The experiment 1 tested the effects of adding mortar (solid line) and bright contrast dotted lines to the borderline of 3 layers of blocks, which are consisted of black and white blocks. On the experiment 2, effects of adding peripheral stimulus on cafe wall illusion were tested. The results of experiment 1 showed that adding dotted line on the borderline mortar between blocks has additive effects on confidency of illusory perception. However, no effect on perceived amount of illusion was noted. On the other hand according to the results of experiment 2, adding blocks did increase amount, but not confidency of illusory perception. These results imply that the perception of cafe wall illusion is related with response of orientation selective neurons.
