A study on the relation between colors and tastes used mostly

ABSTRACT
According to former studies, people can imagine the specific taste by the specific color, not every color. Besides, studies also say that the relation between colors and tastes is decided by personal experience and frequency about the color of food. So the authors supposed that there is the specific color related the taste. To find the relation, we selected 24 colors and 24 taste adjectives mainly used by people. Then, we examined taste imagined on color with questionnaires of 20 college students who are sensitive to colors and able to use all 24 taste adjectives. Then we analyzed the result by MDS. Finally we could find 5 definite relations between colors and tastes. The result suggested that the number of colors which can be associated with tastes are quite limited. Also, only limited colors can be associated with tastes and it is different by sex. This study shows not only the relation between the color and the taste but also how closely the taste is related to other colors. This study can be used for effective food package design, advertising and so on.

Web Accessibility Evaluation of Social Network Sites

ABSTRACT
The SNS(Social Network Service or Social Network Sites), the concept which came along with the Web2.0 is on-line service which focuses on building social network communities of people which used to be established off-line. Foreign SNS sites such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter and domestic SNS sites such as Cyworld, Me2Day are getting popularity continuously and became one of the most important application in internet environments. Since these SNS sites have the purpose of providing infrastructure which enable all the people to share his/her interests with all the other people, it is necessary to appraise whether these sites provide convenient interfaces with proper accessibility to handicapped people and old people who are considered having difficulties in using internet. Web accessibility refers to the practice of providing equal access to people of all abilities and disabilities. If the web accessibility of a SNS site is so low that handicapped people and old people cannot use it properly, those gaps between user groups may become social problems. Therefore, the paper appraised web accessibility of Facebook and Cyworld using automatic tool, KADO-WAH 2.0 and Standard guideline, WCAG 2.0 and suggested the improvement opportunities based on the results of the appraisal.

User-centered relevance judgement model for information retrieval

ABSTRACT
This research takes a user-centered approach to define relevance, the core concept in information retrieval. The literature on relevance has identified numerous factors affecting such a judgment. We examined the model of user relevance judgment that describes the relationship between user relevance criteria and different types of relevance with information search task. We consider 7 criteria of user relevance-topicality, novelty, reliability, understandability, specificity, richness, and interest-and 3 type of user relevance-cognitive relevance, situational relevance, and affective relevance. Data were collected from a semi-controlled survey and analyzed by a structural equation modeling. As a result, topicality and reliability were found to be the essential relevance criteria in all information retrieval tasks. In the fact search task, topicality, reliability, novelty, richness, and interest were found to be significant. In the problem solving search task, topicality, reliability, understandability, and specificity were found to be significant. In the decision making search task, topicality, reliability, novelty, understandability, richness, specificity, and interest were found to be significant. In addition, the relationships between types of user relevance were determined. This research made theoretical and practical contributions to the field of information retrieval by identifying a definite model of user relevance judgment.

ABSTRACT
This study is to establish GUI (graphic user interface) in mobile touch phone for grooming user by using two dimensional emotion model determined by multi-dimensional scale method. The processes conducted in the research were as the followings: First of all, visceral, behavioral, and reflective factors of emotion (Norman, 2002) was defined from investigating the life styles of the Grooming users. Secondly, factor analysis was performed to extract the representative emotional words. In the third step, they were mapped into the two-dimensional emotion model through multi-dimensional scaling. Finally, the mapped emotional words were tried to be related to GUI factors of touch phones and normalizing their relation degree between 0 and 1. This study determined GUI factors significantly related to representative emotions described as special, self-centered, sophisticated, free, passionate, neat for application to mobile touch phone. This study determined the major emotion factors that should be considered the most important while designing the GUI factors.

Scientists preference on spectrophotometer control display design

ABSTRACT
With the help of the advancements in information and communication, information appliances are changing. Flat panels made it possible for information appliances to become smaller in size and lighter in weight, and high end graphics provide increase in realistic and immersive use. Even with these advancements interest in design for laboratory equipment tend to only stay on a level of the exterior of the equipment, not to the point of designing the interface of display GUI. Inspired with the problem above this research would contain the preference analysis ondisplay GUI design considering the characteristics of the main users and the laboratory equipment itself. The test would be held through comparison of graphic-based display GUI and text-based display GUI and analyzing the task time and number of errors made, looking for which display GUI scientist prefer. The test results show that text-based GUI has a higher efficiency but the actual users preferred the graphic-based display GUI.

The effects of cartoon style for interface motion on attraction and attention

ABSTRACT
Today various interfaces are created with the advancement of technology. The flat 2D and static interfaces are general in the past but 3D and motion factors are imported in user interfaces today. It is important to use the motion factors adequately appropriate timing, situation and so on. This study focuses on the motion factor, especially the squash & stretch principle which affects the style of movement. This study investigates the effect of cartoon style(squash & stretch principle) for motion on attraction, emotion and attention. In experiment 1, participants evaluated attraction and emotion words relating to movement after they saw spheres applied to squash & stretch principle and spheres not applied to. The results indicate the squash & stretch principle can make motion not only more attractive but also brighter and more active than the general motion. In experiment 2, a sphere applied to squash & stretch principle and a sphere not applied to were presented at the same time and we measured the reaction time when participants detected change in one of the two spheres. As a result, the reaction time was faster when a sphere applied to squash & stretch principle changed. This suggests that the squash & stretch principle can make motion attract the attention of users.

The effect of the human voice that is consistent with context and the mechanical melody on user`s subjective experience in mobile phones

ABSTRACT
In the past, objective usability was one of the most important aspects when user used system. But nowadays user`s subjective experiences are getting more critical element than objective usability in HCI(human-computer interaction). Most people own their mobile phone and use it frequently these days. It is especially important to make user`s subjective experiences more positive when using devices like mobile phones people frequently carry and interact with. This study investigates whether the interfaces which express the emotion give more positive experiences to users. Researchers created mobile phone prototypes to compare the effect of mechanical melody feedback(the major auditory feedbacks on mobile phones) and emotional voice feedback(recorded human voice). Participants experienced four kinds of mobile phone prototypes(no feedback, mechanical melody feedback, emotional voice feedback and dual feedback) and evaluated their experienced usability, hedonic quality and preference. The result suggests that person`s perceptional fun and hedonic quality were getting increased in the phone which gave the emotional voice feedback than the mechanical melody feedback. Nevertheless, the preference was evaluated lower in the emotional voice feedback condition than the others.

A Study on Sensibility Image of Necktie according to Width and Color Combination of Checked Pattern

ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to investigate the sensibility image of necktie according to width and color combination of checked pattern. The experimental materials developed for this study were a set of stimulus and response scales. The stimuli were 18 color pictures, in which the width(small: 0.2㎝, medium: 1㎝, large: 2㎝), tone combination(similar, contrast), and hue combination(WR: white+red, WB: white+blue, WG: white+gray) were manipulated. The 7-point scale was used for evaluation of sensibility image. The subjects of this research were 216 female college students living in Gyeongnam. The investigation was carried out at September 2009. The data were analyzed by using SPSS program. Analysis methods were ANOVA and Duncan-test. The results of this study were as follows.; The analyses of sensibility for necktie according to width and color combination of checked pattern revealed that the concerned factors are five characteristic dimensions of attractiveness, youth, appeal, elegance, and warmness. Width showed an independent effect on appeal. Tone combination showed an independent effect on attractiveness, appeal, elegance, and warmness. Interaction effects of width and tone combination on attractiveness were found. Hue combination showed an independent effect on all dimensions. In addition, significant interaction effects of width and hue combination on attractiveness, youth, appeal, and elegance were found. Significant interaction effects of tone combination and hue combination on attractiveness, youth, and appeal were found.

Effects of Consistency Criterion for Scoring on the Reliability and the Validity of Polygraph Test for Crime Suspects

ABSTRACT
For scoring polygraph charts, the Prosecutors` Office of the Republic of Korea uses a consistency criterion in which an elevated signal on one physiological channel is scored as a deceptive response only if the signal is also elevated on other channels. In the current study, the effects of this scoring criterion on reliability and accuracy (validity) of polygraph scores were assessed. Polygraph tests on 26 suspects were evaluated twice by the same examiners. The examiners used the consistency criterion in the first evaluation. In the second evaluation, the examiners were prevented from using the criterion; the signals from each physiological channel were separated and randomly arranged before they were rescored by the same examiner. Reliability was assessed by the variation among the scores for each suspect. Accuracy was assessed by establishing a standard, based on a Latent Class Analysis model, using the results of polygraph tests on each of 182 additional suspects. Reliability and accuracy were both improved by the use of the consistency criterion which therefore was recommended.
